Kill the President By Pip Wilson
Published online in installments

The First Lady sleeps, President Lumwedder creeps to the fridge for a snack at midnight. Froot Loops in a bowl, a banana, bread roll, so ... down the mouth hole with little control, and everything’s feelin' … all right!

Thus begins a brilliant romp that keeps me in stitches. (Thanks, Pip! I needed that!) Be sure to follow the saga of President Lumwedder. You, like thousands of Pip's subscribers, will be glad you did. Subscribe to the email so you won't miss a single verse!

    And keep your eyes wide

    Iraq's real WMD crime
    by Lawrence Smallman
    30 October

There are weapons of mass destruction all over Iraq
and they were used this year. Iraqi children continue
    to find them every day.

They have ruined the lives of just under 300,000 people during the last decade -- and numbers will increase.

The reason is simple. Two hundred tonnes of radioactive material were fired by invading US forces into buildings, homes, streets and gardens all over Baghdad.

The material in question is depleted uranium (DU). Left over after natural uranium has been enriched, DU is 1.7 times denser than lead -- effective in penetrating armoured objects such as tanks.

After a DU-coated shell strikes, it goes straight through before exploding into a burning vapour which turns to dust.

"Depleted uranium has a half life of 4.7 billion years –- that means thousands upon thousands of Iraqi children will suffer for tens of thousands of years to come. This is what I call terrorism," says Dr Ahmad Hardan.

As a special scientific advisor to the World Health Organisation, the United Nations and the Iraqi Ministry of Health, Dr Hardan is the man who documented the effects of depleted uranium in Iraq between 1991 and 2002.

But this year's invasion and occupation has doubled his workload ...

Leukaemia has already become the most common type of cancer in Iraq among all age groups, but is most prevalent in the under-15s. It has increased way above the percentage of population growth in every single province of Iraq without exception.

Women as young as 35 are developing breast cancer. Sterility amongst men has increased ten-fold.

But by far the most devastating effect is on unborn children. Nothing can prepare anyone for the sight of hundreds of preserved foetuses –- barely human in appearance.

THINGS DUG UP BY DUG -- News and Views Dug up From Here and There

EMBARRASSED ARMY WEB SITE GOES OFFLINE

The Army has taken one of its popular web sites offline after
The Washington Post reported on a critical account of U.S.
    intelligence posted on the site.

The web site of the Center for Army Lessons Learned (C.A.L.L. or call.army.mil) was promptly disabled following a Washington Post story about an "unusually blunt" report on the inadequacies of U.S. military intelligence in Iraq.

"We're doing some maintenance on the site," an Army spokeswoman at Fort Leavenworth told Secrecy News initially.
She then acknowledged that the move was prompted by the Post story on October 25. The web site should be back up by the end of the week, she said, but the report cited in the Post story "will not be available."

However, the report itself, on "Observations from Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom," from the October 2003 CALL Newsletter, has been helpfully posted by the Washington Post here.

For anyone without Adobe Acrobat, send an email to pdf2html@sun.trace.wisc.edu with the following URL in the body of the email: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/nation/03-27.pdf

The story was first reported in "Intelligence Problems in Iraq Are Detailed" by Thomas E. Ricks, Washington Post, October 25.

Bush in row over Iraq victory banner

    David Rennie, Telegraph.co.uk
    Washington, 30 October

One of the most triumphant images of George W Bush's presidency -- his dramatic landing on an aircraft carrier to declare an end to major combat in Iraq -- has come back to haunt him six months later.

Mr Bush has been drawn into a dispute with the US Navy over who was responsible for a giant banner reading "Mission Accomplished" that hung behind him as he spoke on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln on May 1. At the time, his opponents attacked the banner for claiming premature victory. Now, it is once again fuelling Democratic accusations that Mr Bush did not "level" with the American people about the dangers still faced in Iraq.

On Tuesday, Mr Bush told reporters at the White House that the banner had been put up by the navy -- not by his own staff. He said that he had gone out of his way in his May speech to describe the toppling of Saddam Hussein as only one victory in a continuing war on terrorism, and to give warning that Iraq remained a dangerous place.

A navy spokesman confirmed that the banner was "a navy idea; the ship's idea", and was meant to refer to the end of the Lincoln's record-breaking 290-day deployment.

However, Mr Bush's spokesman, Scott McClellan, later conceded that the banner was actually made and supplied by the White House. "We took care of the production of it," he said. "We have people to do those things. But the navy actually put it up" ...

**America's military commander in Iraq has demanded that intelligence officers hunting for weapons of mass destruction be re-assigned to track the insurgents behind attacks on coalition forces.

RIGHTS AND WRONGS -- Government Encroachment on American Freedom, Media and Elections

    The Progress Report
In a Democracy, Citizens Deserve Full, Open Debate

Multiple polls indicate that the five-way debate held on September 24 between candidates for governor of California was won by Peter Camejo of the Green Party. But at the national level, Democrats and Republicans conspire to ban Greens and Libertarians from debates, claiming that no one can understand debates with more than two participants.

Will Americans be allowed to see full debates between presidential candidates in 2004? We are pleased to bring you this article, shown here with special permission of the authors.

    Open the Debates
by Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman

Is it viable for the United States to provide health coverage to every person in its borders?
Could the economy transition quickly from fossil-fuel addiction to reliance on solar energy and other renewables?

    Of course.

As the presidential campaign heats up in 2004, will we hear about such challenges to the interests of the corporate goliaths?

    That depends.

In part it depends on the structure of the presidential debates.

    Dissing Dissent

In White House Actions, A Troubling Echo of Life in Communist China
    by Liu Baifang
    10/26/03 (LA Times)

Lately, I find myself worrying about my adopted country, the United States. I'm alarmed that dissent is increasingly less tolerated, and that those in power seem unable to resist trying to intimidate those who speak their minds. I grew up in the People's Republic of China, so I know how it is to live in a place where voicing opinions that differ from official orthodoxy can be dangerous, and I fear that model.

Like so many others, I arrived in the U.S. enormously relieved to have left my "socialist" homeland. During Mao Tse-tung's "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution," intellectuals were persecuted, physically intimidated, imprisoned and, all too frequently, killed. Educated people, known as "the stinking ninth category," were terrified into political silence after witnessing the dire consequences of voicing any suggestion of dissenting views.

My parents were engineers, educated people, and so my family was separated and then "sent down" to labor among peasants in the countryside. We were punished merely for being educated.

During this time, there was a dizzying succession of "correct political lines" and an endlessly changing kaleidoscope of labels used by the Communist Party and the state to isolate anyone who disagreed with official thinking. People who criticized the government were dubbed "counterrevolutionaries," or "capitalist roaders" or "running dogs of American imperialism." They were "bourgeois liberals" or "wholesale Westernizers." People tarred with such labels lost friends, jobs and reputations — even spouses. Families were destroyed. When it came to politics, no room was left for ambiguity, doubt or disagreement. We had to pretend to believe that our leaders always knew best, and to toe the political line.

With all criticism stifled, China lost the ability to examine and correct even its most abjectly self-defeating policies.

Can we save ourselves in time?
"The times they are a-changin'," said Bob Dylan in 1963. Could he have foreseen that US citizens would lose their constitutionally guaranteed freedoms before his life was through? Can we honor John Lennon's legacy and "Give Peace a Chance?" It's up to us to fight for our rights and for what is right. About A-Changin' Times

    I'm just sittin here watchin'
the wheels go 'round and 'round.
I really love to watch 'em roll.
No longer riding on that merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go.

    John Lennon

Yep. That's me, too. Watchin' the wheels and singin' outta tune. No wonder I'm dizzy most of the time! The wheels in the world are seemingly spinning out of control. We see exponential growth in some areas, a winding down in others. There are war and hate in one arena, love and unity in another — all born of one event. Astounding fortunes made by some, mean staggering losses for others — within all industries — all at the same time. Earth changes are quaking the very ground beneath our feet while the sun is wreaking havoc with the weather.

This is our opportunity to change our outlook and move forward in a new way, with a willingness to release previously held ideas, let go and to open to possibilities we might not have considered before. We will be required to use creatively what we already have in new ways, and, even if we have to "fake it 'til we make it," it's an opportunity to learn. And it's an opportunity to take action — to let our voices be heard to make a difference, to find solutions, to make a change.

There is another way of looking at things and A-Changin' Times will provide support as we all make our way through this labyrinthine new world.

    Love, peace and clarity,

    Veralynne

Readers, your links and referrals to and recommendations of ACT to friends and family are priceless. We all know folks who could benefit from "another way of looking at things." ACT's philosophy is not to serve as strictly a news source, but to alert, awaken, inspire and motivate readers to exercise their rights and participate in creating positive change for people everywhere.

    Meet the ACTivists

Lisa contributes to ACT from her base on the East Coast of the U.S. While her "Giftedly Outspoken" tagline may have started as a joke, it has proven to be valid! Her dedication to the philosophy of living simply and leaving no footprints on the Earth will reveal itself concerning consumer and health issues, employment crises, environmental activism, animal rights and much more. Lisa is learning to live the "cultural creative" lifestyle which will become more of a necessity for our survival in the days to come. In the meantime, her knowledge of bringing issues to light for grassroots activism will serve to accomplish our goals of making required changes in Washington.

DUG is our West Coast U.S. correspondent. A long-time supporter of ACT's goals, DUG is a prolific researcher and sharer of news and views from off the beaten track. He's seen the writing on the wall for a long time and his caring and altruistic nature motivates him to make every effort to help people understand what's going on under the mainstream media radar. DUG's progressive views and nose for progressive news is much appreciated here. Blog on, DUG!

Working his universal magic from a beach base in Australia, Pip's motto, Carpe Diem or "Seize the Day!", has served him well in approaching and accomplishing his goals of reaching other people. Pip's big heart drives him to research and present information that piques the curiosity, soothes the soul, and motivates those he touches to live life fully. Often entertaining and always informative his own weblog, Wilson's Blogmanac, is a daily "must visit" for thousands around the world. We at ACT are very fortunate to have his interest and caring mastery of the blogging art, for his technical as well as spiritual support and friendship.

Also from Australia, Lucy mentors, facilitates workshops and teaches in the field of personal and spiritual growth. Drawing on Buddhist, Christian and Hindu spiritualities, her website, Inspired Presence, is a creative presentation of her influences, artistic and spiritual. Lucy has recently started working with intuitive tools such as the Mythical Tarot and the Tao Oracle to assist people along their life journeys. Lucy brings to this service poetry's powerful use of symbolism and metaphor -- hence, The Lyrical Oracle, speaking with refreshing beauty and timeless truth, offering you insight, choice and power. Lucy's background provides experience and understanding which she uses in her inspired communication of the wisdom of the cards.

A motorcycle mama, a rock and roller and a true cultural creative, Jeannine (J-9), from the heart of America, brings a brilliant sense of humor to ACT, along with her sense of justice, peace and environmental devotion. J-9 is currently facing a health challenge, and we're looking forward to her great attitude and strength bringing her back to her giving, activist self in short order. J-9 shares Veralynne's enthusiasm for using music and the "hippie" philosophy of minimal consumerism and giving, in revealing the truth and in encouraging the healing of the planet and its global rifts among nations and people.
    Tell J-9 You've Read It!

Veralynne may be Owner/Editor of ACT, but she's merely the ringleader, having been blessed with the voluntary efforts of a group of very different yet like-minded people with gifts to share. Veralynne fancies herself a proud dilettante and "hippie wannabe," reaching back into America's wealth of wisdom from our recent history for philosophy and guidelines to deal with today's issues of war and peace, injustice and lack of love for our mother planet. It's very easy to be cynical these days, but with ACT, Veralynne hopes to temper the pain and confusion we feel with music, creativity, progressive participation in the political process and sharing of ideas, attitudes and ACTions.
